Every Business Central partner is fielding the same question from finance clients right now: what does Copilot really do for us? Business Central Copilot has moved past the demo reel, and by mid-2026 a controller can lean on it for real work without leaving the ERP. The useful answer is narrower than the launch messaging suggests. Copilot is good at a defined set of jobs and it leaves another set alone. Knowing where the line sits is the difference between a smooth go-live and a week-two conversation where the CFO asks for a P&L nobody can produce.

What Business Central Copilot does well

The most-used feature is the one people describe least accurately. Chat with Copilot lets a finance user ask questions in plain language and get records back. Type “show me customers with overdue balances over 30 days” and it finds them, including records in custom tables. For a new hire who doesn’t yet know where anything lives in Business Central, that alone is a win.

Analysis assist goes further. On any list page in analysis mode, you describe the view you want, and Copilot translates instructions like “average cost per category” or “sort by quantity descending” into the rows, columns, filters, and totals. The 2025 and 2026 release waves added the ability to pull fields from related tables and warn you when a design choice will slow the query down. It works on custom lists too. This is a real analytical tool, and for quick interrogation of a dataset it beats exporting to a pivot table.

Copilot is included with the Business Central license at no extra cost, it inherits each user’s existing data permissions, and it runs on Business Central online only, per Microsoft’s own FAQ. Nothing to license separately, nothing to train on your data first.

Bank reconciliation, e-documents, and the close

Two finance features are worth calling out because they touch the close directly.

Bank account reconciliation assist inspects the transactions that automatch left behind, proposes additional matches based on dates, amounts, and descriptions, and suggests general ledger accounts to post the rest to. It’s in preview, and Microsoft is explicit that nothing saves to the database until you review each suggestion and click Keep it. So it accelerates the reconciliation without taking the accountant out of the decision, which is the right design for anything that hits the ledger.

Mapping e-documents to purchase order lines reads an incoming electronic invoice and lines it up against the purchase order it belongs to. For an AP team drowning in supplier invoices, that removes a genuinely tedious matching step.

Both live alongside the newer autonomous agents like the Payables Agent, which run tasks end to end rather than assisting inline. Those agents deserve their own conversation with clients as the roadmap fills out. For day-to-day finance work today, chat, analysis assist, and the reconciliation features hold most of the value.

Where Business Central Copilot stops for finance

Here’s the part that matters for setting expectations. Everything above happens inside Business Central, on Business Central data, rendered in the Business Central grid. That’s the boundary.

Copilot in Business Central has no connection to Excel and no connection to Microsoft 365 Copilot. Microsoft states plainly that Copilot features inside Business Central are unaware of your Microsoft 365 data. Microsoft 365 Copilot for Finance, the product people sometimes confuse it with, is a separate standalone offering that connects to Business Central for specific scenarios like collections. Different tools, different jobs.

Analysis assist produces an analysis view, not a financial statement. It’s a fast way to slice a list. It won’t give you a board-ready P&L with your company’s account structure, prior-year comparatives, and commentary in the format your directors expect. It doesn’t consolidate across legal entities, and it certainly doesn’t reach across separate Business Central environments, which is a common reality for PE portfolios and companies that grew by acquisition. And Copilot in Business Central doesn’t write anything back from a working spreadsheet, because it doesn’t work in spreadsheets at all.

None of that is a failing. Copilot is doing exactly what an in-ERP assistant should. The trouble starts when a finance team assumes it also covers the reporting and planning work that has always happened in Excel.

The report a finance team owes the board

Think about what a controller owes the business each month. A formatted set of statements that ties to the ledger and tells a story. A budget-to-actual variance pack with explanations written next to the numbers. A reforecast that goes back into Business Central as an updated budget. A consolidated view across three entities in two currencies, refreshed on demand.

Copilot in Business Central helps with none of those deliverables. The AI is capable enough. The work simply happens somewhere it doesn’t operate. The report gets built, formatted, and sent from Excel, and the numbers that feed the board flow back into the system as budgets and forecasts. That round trip is where finance spends its time, and Copilot’s current feature set doesn’t reach it.
